<p>The 46th Test Group was formed at Holloman AFB with the 586th Flight Test Squadron operating the AT-38B, replacing the 6585th Test Group and its flying unit the 6586th Test Squadron. The unit has the primary duty to conduct drone operations in conjunction with missile tests. In various guises the unit has performed this task for more than four decades, with the 6585th Test Group activated in August 1970 replacing the Holloman Air Development Center (and later the Air Force Missile Development Test Center). The Group is assigned a mixture of manned and unmanned drones flown as targets for Air Force and Army missile tests. PQM-102As were expended in large numbers during the 1970s, followed by the QF-100 and latterly the QF-106. The Army has utilized a number of QF-86Fs obtained from Canada. Many of the drones operated by the group have survived operations at Tyndall AFB prior to their reassignment to Holloman. Their fate is assured at Holloman AFB as the Air Force and Army are in the business of evaluating the accuracy of ground-to-air and air-to-air weapons rather than providing practice for aircrew.
